Angelina Bowen is a proud first nation woman living in the Sto:lo Territory, in British Columbia. She come from the Haisla Nation (Kitamaat), also in British Columbia. Kitamaat Village are the "People of the Snow". Weaving was once a common activity for many first nations. Unfortunately, it is slowly disappearing. (Cedar hats are hardly done, even down here.)
Angelina has learned a weaving style from elders from the Sto:lo Territory. Learning so much from them, leaves her truly appreciative of their time.
She finds herself choosing/deciding the designs she herself hand paints on her work, while sitting for hours splitting my cedar.
(5% of C'elkilinix̄ʷ Artisan's profits are donated to go towards the cost of materials for children to learn first nation art, within the Sto:lo Territory.)
The more preparation a weaver does in their work, the prouder they are of the outcome.
"C'elkilinix̄ʷ Artisan" was founded by Angelina in 2007. It started in her home, where her creations were given as gifts to friends and families. She then started to sell her weavings in local first nation's art businesses and at first nations events. Internet sales account for a portion of our sales to businesses, leaders, and families around the world. (C'elkilinix̄ʷ is a Haisla term for basketmaker)
